Three historic visions of identity in Scotland, and how we might develop a Christian vision for Scottish identity today
Scottish Identity is more than a tract for the times – it is a solid piece of cultural and historical analysis, unfolding the three great visions which have molded Scotland, church and state. there was the Catholic vision of a famous nation in the unity of medieval Europe; the Reformed vision of a godly nation, covenanted to follow God’s way even if others did not; finally, the secular vision of a moral nation, carrying over values without necessarily accepting any theological basis for them. Scottish identity has been forged out of these three, but is perhaps more fluid than ever, as nationalism and unionism clash today.
